Johns Hopkins researchers make strides in back pain relief
Syracuse (WSYR-TV/ABC) – Back pain affects most Americans at some point in their lives. For many with the worst pain, steroid injections into the spine are a godsend.
But these shots come with side effects such as increased blood sugar, accelerated bone disease and complicated wound healing.
Because of this, many face an agonizing wait from one steroid treatment to the next.
But what if the same shot - without the steroids - could also spell relief?
Johns Hopkins researchers reviewed more than 40 studies and found that spinal shots without steroids had something in common with spinal shots using steroids - they both offered more relief than a third commonly used treatment.
The findings suggest that spinal injections without steroids may offer at least some of the same benefits as spinal injections using steroids - a finding that could bridge a gap for patients aching for relief.
