Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - NewsChannel 9 is taking a new approach to the way we do traffic, and we're calling on our viewers to help! We'll be counting on you for current road conditions and delays.
Everyday we show you the maps and live pictures, but there's no better way to know what’s happening on the road than to hear the report first-hand from other drivers.
That's where you come in. Have you ever heard of the social driving application Waze?
Download the Waze app on your iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows Mobile, BlackBerry, or other smart phone and create an account for real time warnings about traffic delays, construction, or anything that may slow down your commute. The information comes from other “Wazers” driving at the same time as you.
To use it, simply drive with the application open. Waze uses your GPS signal to gather information such as speed and sends the information to others.
For iPhone users, there is a new hands-free version of the app, allowing you to warn others and be warned of traffic delays all with the sound of your voice.
If you don't have the hands-free version, it's safety first. You can only give reports while you are parked, or if there is a passenger in the vehicle because, as you know, texting while driving is illegal.
NewsChannel 9 will be using the information from local "Wazers" to help with our morning traffic reports!
It's easy to become part of the NewsChannel 9 WSYR Traffic Team. Just
download the free Waze app on your phone, go to the icon on the bottom left-hand corner of the screen, click "My Groups" and search "NewsChannel 9."
Remember, the more people who use Waze, the better the information, so spread the word.
In addition to all of the helpful updates, Waze can also get you where you need to go with turn-by-turn guided navigation.
