Auburn (WSYR-TV) - A search for kayakers reported missing Thursday evening has ended. One woman was found just ten minutes after the initial report, a second woman and a teenager were found an hour and a half later.
Cayuga County 911 says the kayakers were initially reported missing at 5:26 p.m. They had set out on the north-flowing Owasco River near the Auburn City limits. Because of the location, the search involved City Police, County Sheriff's Deputies, State Police and a State Police helicopter.
The two adults had reportedly found instructions for kayaking the Owasco River online, although the act is actually illegal.
The first woman located was Catherina Meyers, 31, of Auburn. She was found just ten minutes after the initial report to 911 near Turnpike Road. She reported the group had become separated, but was confident that no one had passed her on the river. This helped to narrow the search.
While the adults had plastic kayaks, the 13-year old accompanying them was using an inflatable kayak that was punctured and began to deflate. At that point, Courtney Nash, 28, of Auburn paddled to shore near Allen Street with the teenager. They would not be found until 7:05 p.m.
The 13-year-old was not identified because of her age.
Meyers and Nash were both charged with illegally boating in the Owasco River.
