Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- It’s the last major holiday for ski resorts and the last hope for them to recoup losses after a mild winter.
There were plenty of people hopping on chair lifts and buckling into skis on Monday. There was even enough snow for skier Shannon Loehr who was taking on her first advanced trail – the black diamond.
“My first impression was that it’s really steep, but it’s easy when you get going,” said Loehr.
Loehr’s family is skiing for mid-winter break, which is exactly what resort managers like to see.
“With the mild weather we’ve had it’s our last chance to bring business in before the springtime,” said Greek Peak Mountain Resort employee Kevin Morrin.
Morrin says it’s been the best week for business this season, with triple the people on the mountain.
But will it be enough business to recoup the season's losses?
“I don't think we'll be able to recover from what we've lost. The whole ski industry has been taking a hit this year…We're doing the best we can for our customers and provide the best service and product possible,” Morrin said.
Still, “It’s actually very nice, not too crowded, very sunny and not too cold,” Shannon says.
