Law passed that makes killing a police animal a felony
Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - Legislation stemming from the shooting death of a K9 unit during a Herkimer standoff has been signed into law.
Governor Cuomo signed into law on Wednesday a law that increases the penalty for killing a police animal from a Class A Misdemeanor to a Class E Felony. During the deadly Herkimer shooting in March, an FBI dog named Ape was shot and killed by the suspect during a building search
The new law will take effect on November 1.
