Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - Children at Syracuse's LeMoyne Elementary School are learning about the importance of reading. They were taking part in a national program called "Read for the Record," that sought to create the largest shared reading experience ever.

The students all packed into the gym Thursday morning and read the classic story "The Very Hungry Caterpillar." The shared reading was part of a special program to teach the very young that reading is not only important - it's fun too!

“What we were doing is we were helping ‘Read for the Record’, which meant people from all over the country were joining together to celebrate reading and to promote reading with everyone,” said Michele Romeo, Library Specialist from LeMoyne Elementary.

The tally of total readers is still growing, and we won’t know if the record was broken for a while.
