A weak area of low pressure will continue to track east from the Great Lakes and will track north of New York, up the St. Lawrence Valley, on Wednesday. As mentioned in earlier discussions, this system is moisture-starved. There will be snow around central New York tonight but it will be light with an inch or less of accumulation or less. Extending south from this is a cold front. The front will move through the region during the morning Wednesday so we will keep snow in for the first part of Wednesday. There could even be a burst of snow with the front as it comes through the Tug Hill and Adirondacks.
With the cold front moving through during the morning, it looks like we will reach our high early in the day Wednesday. We should see our temperatures slowly drop during the afternoon through the 20s. High pressure will briefly build in from southern Canada for Thursday so that will mean a relatively quiet day for us. Things get more interesting for us Friday.
We are actually watching for two separate systems for the end of the week. One will be in the northern branch of the jet stream moving through the Great Lakes and towards central New York. Meanwhile, a second, more potent system moving through the southern branch of the jet stream will move off the Southeast coast Friday and rapidly deepen as it moves northeast. The worst effects from this coastal storm will be felt over New England but that being said, we are looking at the potential for a significant widespread snow (not lake effect) as that part of the storm moving through the northern jet stream moves through central New York
Luckily, Friday’s storm systems will be fast movers as there is no block in the atmosphere up over the Canadian Maritimes to slow things down. By Saturday, our weather will be improving. We’ve introduced a few flurries for early Saturday as a northerly flow of colder air coming over Lake Ontario will cause a limited amount of lake effect. Our weather for the rest of the weekend is quiet as we slowly warm up. It looks we would be warm enough for a bit of rain by Monday.
