Liverpool (WSYR-TV) – The Liverpool varsity ice hockey team raised more than $3,000 at its home opener Tuesday to benefit the Gleason family from Baldwinsville.

Last month, the family was involved in an accident in Western New York that took the life of Audrey Gleason and left her teenage daughter Kelly in critical condition.

The goal Tuesday night was to raise big money for the family and to lend support to a teen who suffered a tremendous loss.

Liverpool hockey player Kyle Broughton doesn’t know the Gleasons, but he felt moved to help after he heard the story.

“It's just that she's 16 and you never know when your life can change in an instant, I can't imagine growing up without your mom, it's got to be so hard,” he said.

"We need to do more of these things, helping one another, it's these kids being empathetic to another child from another school district who was dealt a difficult situation," said supporter James Root.

"This here brings out the best in people, that I see, it's just so wonderful, I mean it brings you to tears, it's amazing," said the victim's brother Dave Przybylak.

All of the proceeds will go to the Gleason family.
