Local Soldier dies in non-combat related incident in Afghanistan

Oswego (WSYR-TV) - A 23-year-old Oswego man died in a non-combat related incident in Jalalabad, Afghanistan on Sunday, according to the Department of Defense.

The young soldier has been identified as Spc. Kyle R. Rookey.

Rookey was assigned to the 4th Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colorado.

Rookey had served in the Army for 2 years and had been deployed in Afghanistan since March. He operated drones - unmanned aerial vehicles.

He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with a bronze service star among other commendations.

He graduated from Oswego High School in 2007.
