EAST SYRACUSE, NY - Firefighters in Onondaga County want to see novelty lighters banned in New York State.

The effort was part of the discussion on Saturday during the Onondaga County Volunteer Firemen Association’s Annual Legislative Breakfast.

The event gives firefighters the opportunity to discuss their concerns with invited lawmakers.

Some novelty lighters are made to look like guns or fishing poles, and firefighters said they therefore have great appeal with children, who often see them as toys.

"The idea is to get them off the market. A lighter is a lighter, you don't have to make it more attractive for kids to want to play with them,” said Breakfast Co-Chairman Tom Perkins.

The Association also wants to require that upholstery in homes be more fire retardant.
