Nedrow (WSYR-TV) -- Onondaga Central took to the football field Friday with a winning record, but there’s something equally exciting happening off the field. The school is one of four in Section 3 to sign up for a project called “Honor the Code.” It’s a program that inspires athletes to honor and keep their schools athletic code by staying away from alcohol and other drugs.
Why focus on athletes? Somewhere between 50 and 80 percent of students are involved in high school sports. Many are role models for younger students.
Four local high schools, including Marcellus, Skaneateles, Lafayette and Onondaga are the first to sign up for the program. The program will provide training and education to athletes, coaches, teachers and parents through the year.
Honor the Code is not just another “Just Say No” program. It appeals to more than the athlete’s sense of right and wrong. Athletes train hard, and they learn what partying can do to their performance.
Did you know one night of heavy drinking is equivalent to wiping out 14 days of athletic training. That could be enough to get an athlete to just say no.
