High pressure will be in control of our weather this afternoon, which means a continuation of sunny skies. That strengthening February sun along with a steady westerly breeze should warm us well above normal yet again. It may not get into the 50s like we saw earlier this week but low to mid 40s this afternoon look like a sure bet.
A big change in our weather is expected later on Friday as a cold front approaches the region in the afternoon. Expect widespread snow showers associated with the frontal passage Friday night and drastically colder air for the weekend with some lake effect snow. As we get closer to the weekend we’ll have a better idea of how the winds are going to set up and what accumulations might be. Right now, the best chance for accumulating lake effect snow in the Syracuse area will be late Saturday night into Sunday morning.
We mentioned in previous discussions that there were some questions as to when the coldest air moves in and how long it stays. It looks now like it may come in on Saturday. Highs will be only in the 20s at best both weekend days. It is also becoming more apparent that the real cold arctic air will only be with us for about two days. By early next week our temperatures will start to moderate.
