SYRACUSE, NY (WSYR-TV) - Emergency crews responded to the Interstate 690 and 81 interchange near Catherine Street for a report of a fire under a bridge late Friday night.

When they arrived around 11:45 p.m., they found the area engulfed in flames. Once firefighters were able to get the fire under control, they found the badly burned body of an unidentified person under the McBride Street bridge.

Police say the victim is a male.  Investigators do not know how old he is.

Police say an autopsy by the Onondaga County Medical Examiner's Office revealed he died from burns and smoke inhalation.

There are no signs of foul play and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

A portion of 690 East from Adams St. to Mcbride St. was shut down for hours as emergency crews were on scene.  It has since been reopened.

Police say the bridge was inspected by the DOT and determined to be safe and the highway is open.

Syracuse Police are asking people with information to call them at 442-5222.
