Utica (WSYR-TV) -- An eight year old Utica boy was injured Tuesday morning after being struck in the head by a sword swung by his father. The incident happened in the 700 block of Elizabeth Street shortly after 8 a.m.
An investigation revealed a man had been getting his girlfriend’s three children ready for school when their father showed up with a Samurai sword. The suspect swung the sword at the boyfriend, but missed, striking the 8-year-old in the head. The children then ran from the house and a fight ensued between the two men.
The victim was cut several times, police said.
The sword used during the altercation was later found outside the residence, but the suspect was nowhere to be found.
The child and the man were taken to the hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries.
Officers later learned there was an active order of protection against the suspect, identified as 42-year-old Thar Kyi, of Utica.
Kyi was eventually found in the Syracuse area. He has since been charged with assault, burglary, criminal contempt and criminal possession of a weapon.
