Syracuse (CNN/WSYR-TV) – A Liverpool man says his nephew, Abdelkadar Chaar, a Syracuse native, has been detained by the Syrian government.

Chaar was born in Syracuse in 1989 and moved to Syria with his parents when he was six years old. He’s currently a medical student and was taken into custody on Janauary 8, according to his uncle.

Chaar’s uncle says it’s unclear why Chaar was arrested.

We’re told Chaar’s family has tried reaching out to Senator Schumer for help, but says they’ve had no luck.
