Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – A Syracuse man accused of setting a series of fires in the city’s Tipperary Hill area admitted on Tuesday to starting a fire that took the life of an elderly man.

Shayne Davis, 32, of West Genesee Street, pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter and one count of arson.

He pleaded guilty to the less charge after police charged him with second-degree murder. Police claimed he set six fires between May 4 and June 18 and believed he may have been connected to other fires in the area.

A fire on Cayuga Street that Davis admitted he set resulted in the death of 90-year-old Fred Brown.

Davis is scheduled to be sentenced on Nov. 27. A judge said Davis will spend 25 years in state prison.
