Parish (WSYR-TV) – A man is dead after a car accident that ended with his car in a pond in the town of Parish.

The Oswego County Sheriff’s Office says 51-year-old John Whitehead was traveling north on County Route 26 around 9:30 p.m. Thursday.

At the intersection of County Route 26 and Smokey Hollow Road, the sheriff’s office says he failed to stop at the stop sign.

The car struck the guard rail and ultimately came to rest in the pond, the sheriff’s office says.

Whitehead was transported from the scene by ambulance and later died.
