BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (AP) - Police have identified the young man killed in a gunfight with officers in Binghamton.

They tell the Binghamton Press and Sun-Bulletin that two city police fired eight shots after 20-year-old Roberto Garcia opened fire as they approached him and another man at about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Police Chief Joseph Zikuski says Wednesday one of the officers was treated for a bullet wound to her ear and released from a hospital.

He says the officers were investigating a report of two suspicious men.

Garcia's companion was questioned and released.

Police haven't said why Garcia decided to shoot at the officers.
