Reno, NV (WSYR-TV) – Reports indicate that a middle school student is responsible for the death of a teacher and injuring two other students when he opened fire with a handgun he took from his parents at a Reno middle school.
Sparks Mayor Geno Martini told CNN that Mike Landsberry, a math teacher at Sparks Middle School, was shot and killed when he attempted to help. Landsberry had served in the military, including tours in Afghanistan, according to Martini.
Two 12-year-old students were injured during the incident, one being shot in the stomach and the other being shot in the shoulder. Sparks Deputy Chief Tom Miller tells CNN that both are in stable condition.
Miller said during an evening news conference that the student who opened fire shot and killed himself.
Sparks Middle School has canceled classes for the week and school will also be cancelled at nearby Agnes Risley Elementary for a day, according to officials.
