Phoenix, Oswego County (WSYR-TV) – Additional drug testing kits will soon be available for parents in Phoenix. The kits became available shortly after a high school student fell ill after taking prescription pills from another girl.
In just three weeks, the Medicine Place pharmacy handed out 35 kits. They’re simple to use, free and anonymous.
The kit consists of a urine specimen cup which a child is given, and then once the specimen is in the cup, it is given to the parent who has a key, which is placed into the side of the cup.
“There is a sticker on the back of the cup, it just has to be removed and it’ll reveal the results,” explained Tony Grosso, a pharmacist at Medicine Place.
The kits test for opiates, which include painkillers Hydrocodone and Oxycontin, as well as marijuana, cocaine and methamphetamine.
Lori Cory, a parent at the district, supports the idea of getting more kits.
“I think it’s a good idea, parents should have kids test for drugs if they feel children are using them,” she says.
Mayor Anthony Fratto agrees. He ordered 35 more kits, which should be available within the next few days.
Fratto says Marcellus and Baldwinsville are also looking in to the idea of getting kits.
