/WSYR-TV) -- Two key provisions of the New York SAFE Act
take effect today, including:
- The maximum capacity for a detachable magazine will be reduced from ten rounds to seven. You can still buy a ten-round clip in New York, but you cannot fill it up.
- People who own assault weapons must now register their guns. The assault weapons registration form will be posted on the New York State Police website. Registration must be completed before April 15th of next year.
Under the NY SAFE Act, assault-style rifle must now be registered with State Police.
The SAFE Act defines an assault weapon as any semi-automatic rifle with either: a bayonet lug on the barrel, a thumb-hole stock, or a pistol grip that protrudes beneath the rifle.
There's a questionaire on the State's SAFE Act website
for anyone who's unsure if the gun they owned is considered an assault weapon.
