LONG BEACH, N.Y. (AP) - New Yorkers have been filling sandbags and crowding into stores for flashlights, water and other supplies in advance of a predicted major coastal storm.

The National Weather Service in Upton, N.Y., expects rain starting late Sunday afternoon. Winds could gust to near hurricane force on Monday and Tuesday.

There are concerns about coastal flooding as Hurricane Sandy moves north.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo has activated the state's emergency crews to monitor the situation.

Utilities throughout the region are preparing to respond to storm damage.

At a Home Depot on Long Island, all the generators were sold out.

Other storm kit suggestions include non-perishable food; cash; prescription medicines; a battery-powered or hand-crank radio; first aid kit; and batteries.
