BRUNSWICK, N.Y. (AP) - A town board has let an upstate New York homeowner off the hook for a $1,400 bill for the water firefighters used to battle the blaze that destroyed his home in a neighboring town.
The Record of Troy reports that the five-member Poestenkill Town Board voted Thursday to forgive the bill the town sent to Michael Pietro two days after his house in the nearby town of Brunswick burned down on Nov. 26.
More than 70,000 gallons of water was used to extinguish the blaze. Firefighters hauled in water in tanker trucks to combat the flames, and the nearest hydrant was located down the road in Poestenkill
Town officials had said they were required to bill Pietro for the water because the town buys its water from the nearby city of Troy.
