NEW YORK (AP) - Police in New York City say they have arrested the mother of a 7-year-old boy who brought a gun and ammunition to school in his backpack.

Fifty-three-year-old Deborah Farley was arrested Friday on charges including criminal possession of a weapon and endangering the welfare of a child.

Police say Farley's son brought the handgun to his Queens elementary school Thursday.

They said it was not clear whether the boy knew it was in his backpack.

Police said the mother learned about the gun and rushed to school. They said she told school officials her son had a dental appointment, then later told them about the gun.

The school was locked down. The backpack was searched and a semi-automatic pistol was found.

No information on an attorney for Farley was available.
