ONONDAGA COUNTY (WSYR-TV) Driving while texting is now illegal in New York State starting November 1.
The state law says drivers can be fined for the offense, only if they are pulled over for another offense.
Onondaga County passed its own ban that says drivers can be ticketed if they are caught texting and driving even though they weren’t pulled over for another offense.
New York State Police say state law takes precedence over county law. However, the Onondaga County Sheriff’s department says it will enforce the county law as long as it's on the books.
Under either law, drivers are subjected to a $150 fine.
