NY's Gillibrand opposes proposed food stamp cuts

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York and anti-hunger advocates are fighting proposed cuts to the food stamps program.

The Senate Agriculture Committee recently approved a farm and food plan with more than $4 billion in cuts to food stamps. Gillibrand was the lone Democrat on the committee to vote against the measure.

Gillibrand appeared in Manhattan on Monday to argue against the cuts along with advocates, food stamp recipients and Tom Colicchio, the co-host of Bravo's "Top Chef." They fear the cuts will hurt low-income families.

Gillibrand plans to introduce an amendment to restore the money by reducing federal subsidies for crop insurance companies.

The full Senate could vote on the bill this week. It faces possible resistance in the House.
