Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - National Grid is asking more than 40,000 customers affected by the lengthy power outage in the northern Syracuse suburbs to use as little power as possible until Friday night.

A power substation on Hopkins Rd. near Liverpool failed Thursday evening. The resulting power outage lasted for several thousand customers until about noon on Friday.

National Grid spokeswoman Virginia Limmiatis said that the company is calling all of the approximately 40,000 homes and businesses served by the substation to ask them to conserve power until at least 8:00 p.m. to aid repair crews in their work.

The cause of the substation's failure is not yet known, she said, noting that crews "are in repair mode right now."
