Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – Around 50 National Guard members at Hancock Airfield are on standby tonight, ready to deploy at a moment’s notice.

The 174th Attack Wing was briefed on Monday morning. They were told they will most likely be sent Downstate or to New Jersey.

If they are deployed, the soldiers will bring communications equipment to provide phone and Internet access to the public and emergency responders.

They will also help to clear debris and even rescue people.

Some of the unit responded to Hurricane Irene last year and they expect similar challenges this time too.

If the 174th is deployed, they expect to be away for as long as a week and a half.
