Washington D.C. (WSYR-TV) - A plan just introduced in the senate would allocate $12 million a year to auto safety funding to research. That money would go toward creating new technology, a steering wheel device that would detect whether someone had been drinking and keep the ignition from turning on.
"People ask would the device be mandatory in every car, we'll cross that bridge when we come to it, but clearly it would be mandatory in the car of any person who had any involvement with drunk driving before. Parents could require to get it in their cars for their kids because so many of our young people fall prey to drunk driving," said Senator Schumer.
A similar proposal has been introduced in the house. Both bills have bipartisan support.
