Camillus (WSYR-TV) -- Falls are the leading cause of trauma-related death for seniors, but a new pro-active program in Central New York aims to keep seniors on their feet.
What you may not know is that there could be hidden hazards inside your home, but they can be easily fixed.
A WAVES ambulance crew walked through a Camillus home, room-by-room, looking for any possible fall hazards. It’s all part of a new fall and injury prevention program just launched by the ambulance service.
“We see a lot of preventable injuries and we see a lot of individuals who suffer their quality of life because they’re afraid of being active and falling,” said Daniel Taylor with WAVES Ambulance.
The free home inspection aims to east those fears. The safety check takes about a half an hour. EMT crews improve lighting, tape down rugs and move thing you may trip over, like lamp cords.
Stairs are an obvious danger for older folks. One in three adults over the age of 65 will fall each year. WAVES responds to hundreds of those 911 calls, which results in 90-thousand ER visits per year in NY State.
“It’s a multi-billion dollar issue that isn’t going away. Not only are there direct costs associated with falls, the EMS side, the hospital side…there’s also significant rehab when we talk about femur and pelvic fractures,”
It all adds up to $54-million in medical costs per year in CNY, which can be prevented with a few simple steps.
The home inspections are free for people who live in Camillus, Minoa and Manlius.
