Clay (WSYR-TV) -- TThe Clay Town Board discussed proposals for two new senior housing developments that could provide homes for up to 1,000 people Monday night. It's an issue that has caused some debate among area neighbors.

The first development is planned for Soule Road and the second could be built on Morgan Road. However, neighbors are petitioning in an effort to put the brakes on the plans.

Traffic is usually the number one concern, but with senior housing you don't get as much traffic flow as you would a regular apartment complex.

About one year ago, the town of Clay introduced a new zoning option, specifically for the housing of people ages 62 and older. Since then, four senior housing developments have been proposed in Clay. Two are already under construction and neighbors say that's enough.

The proposed development at 8198 Soule Road would include up to 50 units. The development proposed at 8097 Morgan Road is scheduled to have 432 units.

For years, Clay Commissioner of Planning and Development Mark Territo says the town has needed, and people have been asking for more senior housing.

Developers hope to build a gas station and a few commercial sites as well. The Morgan Road developers have already done an assessment on how the housing would affect traffic, and what changes to the roads would need to be made.

Developers say they’ll help work through some of the concerns and say the project is necessary because seniors need more housing.

A final decision was not made at Monday’s meeting. The board is still considering the proposals.
