Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – A man who was drunk behind the wheel during an accident that killed his best friend won’t be going to prison.

Huyland Bryant was sentenced to five years probation and 100 hours of community service on Monday.

Last July, Bryant was driving his SUV along Route 174 in Marcellus when he crossed the center line and slammed into an oncoming car.

A passenger in Byrant’s car, Steven Kearney, succumbed days later to injuries he sustained during the accident.

Kearney’s family requested that Bryant be sentenced to probation.
