CAPE VINCENT, N.Y. (AP) - A 21-year-old man in New York’s North Country has been sentenced to prison for fatally stabbing a 51-year-old woman and wounding her daughter, the mother of his young child.

The Watertown Daily Times reports that Mikel Odle of Alexandria Bay admitted in April he killed Mary Burkman of Cape Vincent and put his then-11-month-old daughter in danger during a high-speed police chase on May 21.

The child's mother, 22-year-old Amber Englebert, suffered multiple stab wounds during the attack at Burkman's home but managed to call 911, touching off the chase that ended in a crash.

Odle said in April the violence grew out of an argument with Englebert over visitation rights.

He was sentenced Friday to from 37 years to life for second-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder and first-degree reckless endangerment.
