SYRACUSE, NY (WSYR-TV) - Local veterans were honored on Sunday at the annual Veterans Day Ceremony inside the Onondaga County War Memorial.
A Navy veteran told NewsChannel 9 that we should all at least take a moment to recognize the men and women who have sacrificed for our country.
"Just remember the veterans. Remember the people that gave the ultimate sacrifice so you can have the freedom that you have at the present moment," said Navy veteran Gary Williams.
But not every seat was filled in Memorial Hall inside the Onondaga County War Memorial. Some veterans noticed, including Williams.
"A little disappointed, but this is 2012 and people do have things that they have to do, but it wouldn’t hurt for an hour or two to view what was going on. After all, if it weren’t for the veterans the country would have a problem,” said Williams.
The event featured keynote speaker Colonel Greg A. Semmel, Commander of the New York Air National Guard's 174th, County Executive Joanie Mahoney, Congresswoman Ann Marie Buerkle and other community leaders.
The Oswego City Veterans Council held its Veterans Day Ceremony on Sunday at Veterans Park in Oswego
During the ceremony a flag was lowered and placed in the hand of Oswego Mayor Gillen for safe keeping during the winter months.
