Every Friday on The Morning News, right around 6:20am, we take a quick trip in the WABAC (wayback for those not familiar with Mr. Peabody) machine to list and play the top songs we were all listening to as kids, teens and young adults. Our flashback today was the year 1977; KC and the Sunshine Band topped the charts with I'm Your Boogie Man. Fleetwood Mac was number two with Dreams. Sir Duke, by Steven Wonder was number 3. Got to Give it Up by Marvin Gaye was four and the theme from Rocky, Gonna Fly now by Bill Conti rounded out the top five.
During the commercial break, that 70's playlist got us all talking about the popular dance spots, clubs and taverns that were must-hit spots on certain nights of the week in the late 70's and early 80's. Who remembers Uncle Sam's with the raised colored dance floor and long waits to get in? We all agreed, you were there or at Club 37 or the Sugar Mill on Saturday night dress up night. Producer Jim remembers Uncle Sam's on Monday's for oldies. By vote, Tuesday's at TC's took the top spot (the old Tecumseh Club, now Saratoga Steaks) We couldn't remember who drew the crowds on Wednesday's. I think it was ladies night somewhere. Jim says it was Uncle Sam's again, but what about the Gin Mill? Poor House West was the place to be on Thursday's and Lee's got everybody's vote for the best place to be on Friday night, followed by RJ O'Tooles, The Other Side, Sutter's Mill, Machine Shop. Don't forget, if you were on the East Side, before going home you had to make a pit stop at Abe's on the Boulevard for a doughnut.
Did you have a favorite? Share your memory and be sure to reminisce with us every Friday morning. ( Admittedly clueless when it comes to lyrics by Lady Gaga, at 6:20am you just might catch Dan Cummings singing all the words to one of the songs we're playing. But only if it's pre-1977. Now that's worth missing sleep for!)
