Partial proceeds from 'One World Concert' used to set up scholarship in honor of student killed in Syria
Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- Part of the proceeds from Tuesday night’s One World Concert are being used to set up a scholarship in Bassel Shahade’s name.
Shahade was a Syracuse University graduate student who was killed in Syria earlier this year.
The film major was working on a documentary about violence in Syria when he was killed.
A series of remembrances were held in his honor on campus Wednesday morning and concluded with a concert in his memory Wednesday night.
In addition to the scholarship, the money from the One World Concert will help create a Syracuse International Film Award inspired by Shahade. It will be awarded to a filmmaker whose work about social issues sparks positive change.
