Buffalo (WSYR-TV) -- Buffalo Police and Mayor Byron Brown are crediting police surveillance cameras and helpful eyewitnesses for the quick arrest of a suspect in a dangerous hit and run.
Dramatic video released by police on Monday shows a driver striking a pedestrian, sending him flipping through the air. The driver came within inches of hitting two other pedestrians.
Police say the incident took place around 3 a.m. Thursday morning, at the corner of Letchworth and Grant Street.
Thanks to the video, police say they were able to catch up to the suspect, 19-year-old Tornubari Gbaraba within minutes.
“He was arrested and charged with assault in the first degree, reckless driving and fleeing a police officer,” said Buffalo Police Commissioner, Dan Drenda.
Amazingly, the victim, 18-year-old Victor Jerez, was okay. He was treated for several injuries at ECMC and released a short time later.
Police say they don’t believe alcohol played a role in the accident, but say they’re not sure if the victim was targeted by the driver.
