Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - The Onondaga County Public Health Department has confirmed that one person is dead after being diagnosed with the EEE virus.

Health Commissioner Dr. Cynthia Morrow declined to offer any additional details such as the identity, including name, age, or gender of the victim.

The health department has rescheduled aerial spraying of a portion of the Cicero Swamp for Friday, Sept. 10, or Saturday, Sept. 11. Tuesday night's aerial attack was postponed due to windy weather conditions.

The brain disease is rare in humans, but can be deadly. The Centers for Disease Control says there's an average of five human cases each year in the United States.

Public health officials advise people to take precautions against mosquito bites in areas where EEE has been found in the insects or horses.
