Canastota (WSYR-TV) - Police say the driver of a car that slammed into a bus on North Main Street in Canastota Tuesday morning was drunk at the time of the crash.

The driver, 24-year-old Edward Ellis III, of Canastota and a passenger, 20-year-old Andrew Prior, also of Canastota, were taken to the hospital, and both are expected to be okay.

Seventeen people were on board the bus, and three suffered minor injuries.

Police say the Madison County Alternative Industries bus was coming to a stop to pick up passengers just before 8:00 a.m. when Ellis drove too fast around a corner and hit the bus head on.

Police say Ellis and Prior had eaten breakfast, then started drinking.

Ellis is charged with driving while intoxicated, among other charges.
