Police: NY state Senate candidate arrested
MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) - Police say New York state Senate candidate David Mejias has been arrested on menacing, reckless endangerment and stalking charges in connection with a domestic incident.
The former Nassau legislator is scheduled for arraignment Thursday.
His ex-girlfriend told police she was driving on Wednesday when she saw him following her. She said he passed her car and forced her to stop. She accuses him of yelling and screaming at her and then continuing to follow when she drove away.
The Democratic candidate is challenging incumbent Sen. Kemp Hannon. He served six years in the Nassau County Legislature.
Campaign spokesman Akeem Henry did not return a call for comment. Mejias has canceled a scheduled news conference where he was to receive several endorsements.
