Police say late Auburn teachers union boss acted alone in stealing more than $800K
Auburn (WSYR-TV) – Auburn Police say they have concluded an investigation into the embezzlement of more than $800,000 in teachers union funds and determined that top official Sally Jo Widmer acted alone.
They believe Widmer stole the money between January 2006 and November 2012, using the money to pay personal bills and credit cards.
Police said they believe no one was aware that Widmer was using the money for her own purposes.
Police said those around Widmer believed she received money from a family business and her long teaching career and corresponding pension.
They indicated that a lack of checks and balances in the union’s top levels prevented them from discovering the thefts.
Police credited new union leadership with uncovering the crime.
The union told police it has since implemented a system of checks and balances that had been lacking.
