Syracuse (WSYR-TV/ABC News) – A recent poll indicates that while an overwhelming majority favor mandatory background checks at gun shows, the nation is more closely divided on other gun-related issues. According to an ABC News/Washington Post poll
, 91 percent of those surveyed favor checks.
The poll also indicates that Americans favor stronger law enforcement regarding illegal guns. 82 percent of those polled said illegal gun sales should be a Federal crime.
Meanwhile, 57 percent of Americans support a ban on so-called assault weapons, while 41 percent oppose the ban.
New York State has passed historic legislation against assault weapons in the wake of the Sandy Hook massacre, in which Adam Lanza used an AR-15 purchased by his mother to kill 20 first-graders and several staff members at a Connecticut elementary school.
50 percent of those polled support armed guards in schools, while 48 percent oppose such a measure.
