Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- A group of young Central New Yorkers has overcome the odds to compete in their favorite sport. On Friday, CNY United -- a power soccer team in Syracuse -- geared up for the biggest competition of the season.

The team has a roster of eight players who each, through their dedication and determination, play the game of soccer in motorized wheelchairs.

"Even though I haven't been able to participate in athletics, I've always wanted to," said power soccer player, Skyler Canute. "When I heard about this it was a great opportunity to play a game I did like to play before, but I could never play with my friends."

That life-changing opportunity came when Canute joined CNY United.

For 11 months, every week, the team practices for hours and it's all in preparation for their biggest competition of the year.

"It's our conference cup, end of the year, so our top teams move up in conference to the premiere. that's the highest conference," said Peyton Sefick.

Each of the team's eight players has overcome obstacles most athletes will never have to worry about. It's that determination that's garnered attention across the state and the nation.

The team has even qualified for the National Playoffs this July in Indiana. They took third place last year, but hope to take home the gold this year.
