Corning (WSYR-TV/WETM-TV) – A pregnant Southern Tier woman who escaped the authorities is behind bars after jumping from a third-story hospital window and then holding a woman and baby hostage.
Police had been looking for 35-year-old Billie Jo Ribble of Bath – a Twin Tiers Most Wanted suspect – since October for burglary and grand larceny.
Pennsylvania State Police caught up with her on Friday in Mansfield. When she complained of stomach pain due to her pregnancy they took Ribble to a hospital in Wellsboro.
Police say she assaulted a corrections officer at the hospital and then jumped out of a third-story window, landing on a catwalk.
According to police, Ribble then entered a 19-year-old woman’s home, threatening the woman and her 6-month-old baby with a butcher knife.
According to the US Attorney’s office, Ribble told the victim she would kill her, the baby, and herself if she wasn’t driven to New York.
Ribble demanded that the woman drive her to New York State and used the woman’s cell phone to set up a meeting with someone.
Police say Ribble then removed the cell phone’s battery and told the woman to return to Pennsylvania.
Ribble was found after police traced the call to her boyfriend's home on Decatur Street in Corning.
The US Attorney’s office says Ribble barricaded herself in the attic of the home, but eventually surrendered to the authorities.
She was arraigned in Corning City Court.
The US Attorney’s office charged Ribble with kidnapping. She faces a sentence of 20 years to life in prison if she’s convicted.
