Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - Selling wine in grocery stores is still facing an uphill battle as it waits to go before the legislature for approval, but wineries are hoping to sway leaders as they make their decision.

About 20 winery owners gathered in front of Senator Dave Valesky's office Friday morning with signs and petitions asking for the senator to support the legislation.

The demonstrators say the plan will create hundreds of jobs and create money that the state needs in such a tough fiscal year. "There's more people who are deeply concerned about the very big budget gap that we have this year. For the potential to create roughly $300 million in revenue in a year where we are as stretched as we are right now, I think there are a lot of people that want to keep it in there," said Lamar Wells, a winery owner.

Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver has said that the proposal might not survive the budget process in the assembly or the senate.
