AUBURN, NY (WSYR-TV) - The Auburn Rotary Club came to the rescue on Sunday to help make sure women battling breast cancer have financial support.
Since 2001, the RISE and Walk breast cancer fundraiser has been held in Auburn on the first Sunday of October.
In years past, the city waived the insurance and stage fee for the event, which amounted to about $1,000.
This year, the city told RISE it is not in a fiscal position to waive those fees.
RISE said it did not want to take money away from the breast cancer patients it helps, and decided to cancel this year’s walk.
The Auburn Rotary Club learned of RISE’s decision in a newspaper article and wanted to do something to help. On Sunday it donated the necessary insurance money, allowing RISE to hold its walk next Sunday, October 14th, at noon.
Money raised from the fundraiser will help people with breast cancer pay for expenses that you might not think of.
"There's extra gas money. Some of the girls need baby sitting money. We’ve helped with mortgages, mortgage payments. We’ve helped fix cars so that they can make their appointments,” said RISE founder Stacey Petrosino.
A location for the RISE and Walk fundraiser in Auburn is expected to be decided on Monday.
