Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - You would never guess from the weather we've been having that the Fourth of July weekend is upon us.

The rain is putting a damper on barbecues, family gatherings and fun in the pool -- especially for those who laid down some big money to swim in the comfort of their backyards.

It took Margie Milligan three years before she could convince her husband Bob to buy her a pool.

Finally, in May, he caved. But Milligan hasn't been able to take advantage of her backyard retreat as much as she'd hoped.

“I wish it would be sunny every day so I could use it,” she says. “We have a handicapped child and that's why we put it in too, but he can't go in until it gets really warm.”

Margie says she's been swimming only six times since the pool was installed.

Even though the weather has kept the Milligans from using the pool as often as they'd like, they are fortunate they got it in when they did.

“Rain is a problem for anyone in construction, because a lot of our equipment has tires -- it doesn't have tracks like a tank or like the dump trucks,” says Cliff Malzman of Cannon Pools and Spas.

Cannon Pools and Spas has held off on doing any digging for the last couple of days. Otherwise, the company risks making a mess out of their clients' yards.

For anyone who is thinking about getting a pool, they don't come cheap: An above-ground pool will run you between $2,000 and $4,000. An in-ground pool will cost between $10,000 and $20,000.
