Report: More than 90 dead after boat catches fire, sinks off of Italian coast
Italy (WSYR-TV/CNN) – At least 92 people died when a ship carrying African migrants toward Italy caught fire and sank off the Sicilian island of Lampedusa today, spilling hundreds of passengers into the sea, reports RAI.
However, many more are feared dead as the boat was carrying 450-500 people and only around 150 have been saved so far.
It is one of the deadliest migrant shipwrecks in recent times and the second one this week off Italy: On Monday, 13 men drowned while trying to reach southern Sicily when their ship ran aground just a few meters (yards) from shore at Scicli.
Lampedusa Mayor Giusi Nicolini wept as she relayed the news of the accident to reporters, saying "It's an immense tragedy."
