Report: Webster gunman shot himself, was not hit by police
Webster (WSYR-TV) – A State Police report confirms that a Webster man who police say shot four firefighters – killing two – shot and killed himself during the incident.
Before the report from State Police emerged, Webster police indicated that although an officer had fired his gun, William Spengler died as a result of a self inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
The report also indicated that:
Michael Chiapperini died as a result of a single gunshot wound
Tomasz Kaczowka died as a result of two gunshot wounds
Human remains were also found in the home on Lake Road that Spengler shared with his sister Cheryl Spengler.
Webster police believe the remains are those of Spengler’s sister, but they cautioned that the identity has not been confirmed. Cheryl Spengler has been unaccounted for since before the morning of the incident.
On Monday, firefighters responded to a report of a home and a car on fire on Lake Road. When they arrived, they were greeted by a barrage of bullets.
Four firefighters were hit and two were killed.
Joseph Hofstetter and Theodore Scardino were injured. On Wednesday, hospital staff said their condition had improved from guarded to satisfactory.
A fifth man – off-duty Greece Police officer John Ritter – was also injured during the incident.
