We learned today of the death of singer Al Martino. He was 82. Many of us remember Al for his role of Johnny Fontaine in the movie "The Godfather." He was no stranger to Syracuse. I met Al on several occasions when he appeared at the old Three Rivers Inn. I also interviewed him many times during the sixties and seventies. His death brings to mind the time we were side by side putting on makeup at the former WHEN-TV.
Al asked me if I could sing. I told him not very well. But he insisted I sing along with him as he warmed up for his TV appearance. I gave it a try, but not very well. "Don't quit your day job," Al quipped.
Probably the best advice I ever got. By the way, the song was Al's big hit: 'Spanish Eyes." Al was a native of South Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I'm going to miss him, but his CDs will always be in my car.
